Bill Harris is one of the contributors listed in the back of the book “The Secret”. I was surprised to only find one entry by him in the text of the book. It talks about a gay guy who focused his thoughts on what he did not want like rejection, and then he attracted rejection which made his life a living hell. Of course, the solution was to focus his thoughts on what he realy wanted, which meant being accepted for what he was or what we call in parenting, receiving unconditional love from his fellow human beings. I felt this little scenario was a tiny contribution to a 200 page book. So I started cruising the Internet and found a nice surprise.
Bill Harris tells us that the steps outlined in “The Secret” will get us what we want but it leaves a lot out to change our life with the principles that are outlined in the book. “The Secret” deals with the Law of Attraction, meaning we attract what we focus our mind on. The part that the book leaves out is the part where we take action to make the best of what the Universe is giving us.
The first thing that comes to my mind are my credit cards. When we moved to the country from the big city five years ago, we were debt-free except for the housepayment because we could pay off our credit cards with the proceeds of the house we sold in the city. Then I had some eye surgery and charged it, I bought some new kitchen cabinets and charged them, and I took a trip to Switzerland to see my parents and charged it. That brought my credit card close to 8,000 dollars with no relief in sight. Since I had made minimum payments all my life, my credit score is in very good shape and I got offers about every six months to transfer my balances with 0% interest for 12 or 18 months. So I did this several times, always thinking in the back of my mind that the money will come to pay off the whole amount.
When my Dad died two years ago, I got 3,000 dollars inheritance money which I put on my credit cards and I realized I needed a part-time job to pay off the balance. My concentration on becoming debt free, must have been taken notice by the Universe, because I got a job I can live with and the credit card got paid off in about six months with adding a 2,400 dollar lumpsum retirement payment. My retirement cushion is gone, but who cares, I might be dead before I am 66 years old.
From this experience I learned that we have to help the Universe along in helping us to achieve our goals in life and I am grateful to Bill Harris that he emphasizes the part of helping ourselves while we’re waiting for our projections to come to fruition.
