I Won

November 29, 2007

I finally got my 3 scratch game cards from Libby’s vegetables after I sent in a total of 15 labels of canned vegetable. Each scratch card says: Buy 4 cans and get one free can of vegetables. The max. value of each free can is $ 1.09; that is a whopping 3dollars and 27 cents total. We can’t get Libby’s vegetables here in Kimball, NE. So I will have to drive the 95 mile round trip to Sidney, NE. My car gives about 25 miles to the gallon of gas which 4×3 dollars and some cents for gas, close to13 dollars for gas. Vegetables are getting awfully expensive these days, aren’t they? I just wonder, if we can deduct the gas from the $ 3.27  the scratch cards are worth? Anybody know?

Also to get the $3.27 free cans, I have to pay for 12 cans of Libby’s vegetables.

Tips

November 26, 2007

When you win a prize that is worth some money, look for ads of the same item, and if it’s advertised for less, send the ad to the IRS with your tax return to justify your lower Fair Market Value for tax purposes.

Some sweepers file their mail-in-sweeps by date.

If you are a faithful reader of my blog, you know by now that local contests give you the best chance of winning for 2 reasons.

A contest requires a skill and the smaller the locality where you participate in a contest gives you the best reason to  show your skill. When I glanced at my local paper just now, I was drawn to the article about “Gorsuch, Beguin win week 12 grid contest.” That means they participated in the 44th annual football contest where every week during playtime the first place winner takes home 15 dollars and the second winner 10 dollars plus, all non-winners go into drawing at the end of the contest. So check your local paper for a chance to win a few bucks.

Last week our regional paper had a contest where we had to match a dozen first ladies to their husbands and fill in the missing one, who in this case was the only president who was single and apparently a sodomite who had the bad luck that his fiancee committed suicide, while all the rest of our illustrious presidents were smart enough to find a woman and get hitched before they occupied the White House which got its name under Theodore Roosevelt.

I believe that all the experts on sweeping agree that the best time for sweeping is coming up during the days leading up to the holidays when everybody is busy with baking, shopping, and what have you to get ready for Christmas which means people have less time to enter sweeps and contests, and your chances of winning a prize is increased.

Carol Mclaughlin reports in her Nov.2007 newsletter that one couple found each other through sweeping and they were getting married on Sept 16.2007 after 11 years of dating each other. Harriet Brown was 80 years old and Stanley Stark was 98 years old. They visited many National Conventions together before they tied the knot. Helen belongs to the club of the Rockford Sweepers, IL  This story with a good ending proves that sweeping is not just the hobby that pays but also the hobby with side benefits.

The Bible and Gambling

November 20, 2007

Last week’s National Examiner had an article about the Bible being responsible for many lottery winnings when people read it and use the reference where it is written as lottery numbers, for example: Exodus 6:8, Matthew 10:14, and Act 1:26 would be a lottery ticket with the numbers of: 1, 6, 8, 10, 14, 26.

I kept thinking how could these numbers be used to enter sweeps and contests and the answer is to convert these numbers into dates, like days of the month. If I was reading Exodus 6:8 one day, it would tell me to send out my mail-in entries on the 6th and 8th day of the month or reading all three paragraphs in the same day could mean to send out my entries on the 1st, 6th, 8th, 10th, 14th and 26th day of the month or play online on these days. Any combination of these numbers will work for the superstitious entrant or believer in the Bible.

I was especially happy today to discover that the Bible is all for gambling. Here are some examples when these Holy Men  threw lots which is the equivalent of gambling.

Jos 18:1  I will assign the land to the tribes by casting sacred lots here in the presence of the Lord of Shiloh.

Joel 3:3  They cast lots to decide which of my people would be their slaves.

Acts 1:26 Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the eleven.

For me, this proves that the Old and the New Testament approve of gambling and every Christian is allowed to gamble without having to go to Confession. Praise the Lord!

Gambling is in the blood of every Native American. I don’t know how to check the Koran

for approval of gambling but there is certainly a huge population in the US who can gamble without repercussion from their religion or cultural beliefs.

Generous Lottery Winner

November 20, 2007

I have written awhile ago about experienced sweepers and contestants helping their fellow man with their entries for chances to win prizes. In this week’s National Examiner, my favorite gossip magazine, is another uplifting article about a lottery winner, that gives me hope that the world is not completely going downhill. A Canadian man by the name of Barkley Heron won 11 million dollars and put his winnings right away to good use, when He, a gas station owner, slashed the gas price on his pumps in half. I find his deed so very admirable because he gave a large amount of people who try to pay bills from day to day a helping hand to make their life a bit easier. May God bless him.

Ghostwriter (continued)

November 20, 2007

I found this paragraph in the “Beginning Writer’s Answer Book” about What’s a work for hire agreement?

A work-for-hire project is one that permanently gives all rights of a work to the person or business that assigns or purchases it. A freelance writer who signs a work-for-hire clause gives up his copyright and also his right to any further income from that material. Work-for-hire agreements and transfers of exclusive rights must appear in writing to be legal.

I believe, in this paragraph freelance writer = ghostwriter, which means that the payment has to be in writing to transfer the rights of, let’s say a contest jingle, to the contest entrant. Apparently, word of mouth is not binding in this case. To me, this means, I better have paper and pen handy, when I outsource my creative contest entries to more gifted people than myself and hope that my expenses are smaller than my winnings. Amen to that.
